The Second Death
✅ Introduction
As a missionary and a active soul-winner for more then 14 years, this topic of Hell needs to be taught more because most of the people I’ve talked to either don’t know about it or has a misunderstanding about it, especially here in Wairoa and a lot of people mean well and want to be politically correct so they down play Hell to be kind and considerate to others but the reality is, Hell is a place of fire and torment which is called the second death.
🔥 1. Reality of Hell
📖 Revelation 20:14-15 (KJV) And death and hell were cast into the lake of fire. This is the second death. 15 And whosoever was not found written in the book of life was cast into the lake of fire.
The Second death is a spiritual death, where all unbelievers die once, then die the second death which is their souls are thrown into hell, and whatever we think about souls, we will see that the second death is unpleasant to the soul.
📖 Revelation 20:10 (KJV) And the devil that deceived them was cast into the lake of fire and brimstone, where the beast and the false prophet are, and shall be tormented day and night for ever and ever.
It amazes me how people down play hell, as some say its being dead consciously or separated from God as some would say.
📖 2 Thessalonians 1:9 (KJV) Who shall be punished with everlasting destruction from the presence of the Lord, and from the glory of his power;
The misunderstanding here is the unsaved are punished from presence of Gods mercy, thats why it adds “and from the glory of his power”, your away from his glory you won’t see it being in his wrath.
Because God is Omnipresent (meaning God is everywhere) and the Bible states this.
📖 Psalms 139:7-8 (KJV) Whither shall I go from thy spirit? or whither shall I flee from thy presence? 8 If I ascend up into heaven, thou art there: if I make my bed in hell, behold, thou art there.
We cannot hide from the presences of the Lord in that sense, but the unsaved will be from the presences of his glory and power.
📖 Revelation 14:10-11 (KJV) The same shall drink of the wine of the wrath of God, which is poured out without mixture into the cup of his indignation; and he shall be tormented with fire and brimstone in the presence of the holy angels, and in the presence of the Lamb: 11 And the smoke of their torment ascendeth up for ever and ever: and they have no rest day nor night, who worship the beast and his image, and whosoever receiveth the mark of his name.
So it’s clear that the holy angels and the Lamb of God (The Lord Jesus) can se you still burning because it says in their presences! And notice it says Torment forever and ever, and they have no rest day and night?
How can hell be unconsciousness, or only separation from God, its more than and Jesus gives us the story in Luke 16.
🔥 Rich man and Lazarus
Luke 16:22-31 (KJV) And it came to pass, that the beggar died, and was carried by the angels into Abraham's bosom: the rich man also died, and was buried; 23 And in hell he lift up his eyes, being in torments, and seeth Abraham afar off, and Lazarus in his bosom. 24 And he cried and said, Father Abraham, have mercy on me, and send Lazarus, that he may dip the tip of his finger in water, and cool my tongue; for I am tormented in this flame. 25 But Abraham said, Son, remember that thou in thy lifetime receivedst thy good things, and likewise Lazarus evil things: but now he is comforted, and thou art tormented. 26 And beside all this, between us and you there is a great gulf fixed: so that they which would pass from hence to you cannot; neither can they pass to us, that would come from thence. 27 Then he said, I pray thee therefore, father, that thou wouldest send him to my father's house: 28 For I have five brethren; that he may testify unto them, lest they also come into this place of torment. 29 Abraham saith unto him, They have Moses and the prophets; let them hear them. 30 And he said, Nay, father Abraham: but if one went unto them from the dead, they will repent. 31 And he said unto him, If they hear not Moses and the prophets, neither will they be persuaded, though one rose from the dead.
This story shows that hell is consciously in torment day and night forever and ever, just as all other scripture has put it, and people will say that this story is symbolic or a parable?
How can this story be a parable when Jesus is giving real names of people, only the rich man don’t have a name because he is irrelevant, being in the second death makes you irrelevant, a nobody.
And whats the point in telling a story of hell like this if it’s all symbolic, that doesn’t make sense?
🔥 2. How can a Loving God do Such a Thing?
One of the main reasons people reject the doctrine of Hell is because they cannot reconcile it with God’s love. They ask, “How could a loving God send people to Hell?” But the real question is how could a holy God ignore sin?
People often make excuses to soften Hell:
Hell is just separation from God.
A loving God wouldn’t punish anyone forever.
Eternal fire sounds cruel it must be symbolic.
Good people don’t deserve that kind of punishment.
These ideas all come from human reasoning, not divine revelation.
They reflect a distorted view of sin and holiness. Man sees sin as “a mistake.” God sees sin as rebellion against His eternal nature an offense that demands eternal justice.
Hell exists not because God is cruel, but because God is just.
He must punish sin to remain holy, just as a good judge must condemn evil in a courtroom. If God ignored sin, He would no longer be righteous.
But here’s the beauty of it: Hell also reveals God’s mercy because it stands as a warning sign to keep people from going there. It’s a deterrent, not God’s desire.
📖 2 Peter 3:9 (KJV) The Lord is not slack concerning his promise, as some men count slackness; but is longsuffering to us-ward, not willing that any should perish, but that all should come to repentance.
So the way we should look at this is, Hell is a punishing place built for Satan and his Angels and also for those who refuse to believe in God? It makes total senses to me.
📖 2 Thessalonians 1:8 (KJV) In flaming fire taking vengeance on them that know not God, and that obey not the gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ:
🔥 How Can a Loving God Create Such a Place?
If Hell is so heinous and inhumane yet God made a way for all to escape for free as Gift by the blood of Jesus yet you refuse to take it thats your fault you are prideful, excuses don’t work when your there.
God is just and righteous and has to punish sin, that is why its there, the reason for it being inhumane is to deter sinners to trust in God, if the punishment was anything lesser then Hell then sin would be more rampant.
It’s like when a criminal gets a slap on the hand for murder, thats unjust, but if there was a death penalty for murder then it would slow down the crime rate. Think about that for a second.
🔥 3. Escape the Second Death
Now the Bible does give us a way to escape the second death and thats due to God being so loving to us even a sinner.
📖 Romans 5:8-9 (KJV) But God commendeth his love toward us, in that, while we were yet sinners, Christ died for us. 9 Much more then, being now justified by his blood, we shall be saved from wrath through him.
Let us go back to our main text and see how we can escape this Second death.

So the question we should asking is how do we get our names in this book of life?
📖 Revelation 3:5-6 (KJV) He that overcometh, the same shall be clothed in white raiment; and I will not blot out his name out of the book of life, but I will confess his name before my Father, and before his angels. 6 He that hath an ear, let him hear what the Spirit saith unto the churches.
The next step is to know how to overcome right? Because if you overcome your name will not be blotted out but remain in the book of life, so what how do we overcome?
📖 1 John 5:4-5 (KJV) For whatsoever is born of God overcometh the world: and this is the victory that overcometh the world, even our faith. 5 Who is he that overcometh the world, but he that believeth that Jesus is the Son of God?
This is John who wrote the book of Revelation, he tells us the answer to overcoming is by believing on Jesus! Amen, this is true Love of God,
Speaking on this note, while we are talking about the book of life, notice that in this book names are only taken out not put in, thats because everyones name get placed in there from before they are born, and its only removed when you die without Christ.
and Why I bring this up is because, people ask about babies, do they go to heaven, and the answer is “yes” because a baby is still in innocency as we know from scripture that king David’s child died and God said that the child will be heaven.
📖 2 Samuel 12:22-23 (KJV) And he said, While the child was yet alive, I fasted and wept: for I said, Who can tell whether GOD will be gracious to me, that the child may live? 23 But now he is dead, wherefore should I fast? can I bring him back again? I shall go to him, but he shall not return to me.
So people ask well how can we know what age until they are in the stage of innocency? Well, we look to Adam and Eve, when did they begin to die spiritual, after the knowing right from wrong, when they sinned and knew it. for kids this is around the 4-5 even 6 year olds really depends on the child’s maturity.
All I want to say is God is just and holy to punish sin, and he’s loving to make a way so that we can be forgiven.
📖 John 3:16 (KJV) For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life.
Isn’t that great we can escape the second death by having faith on Jesus Christ, believing that he died for our sins, and rose again the third day, this is also known as the free gift of God.
📖 Ephesians 2:8-9 (KJV) For by grace are ye saved through faith; and that not of yourselves: it is the gift of God: 9 Not of works, lest any man should boast.
This is the most important message to tell when we are soul winning, its a message that needs to be taught more often because its under attack by humanism, psychology, and soft religion has tried to erase Hell, redefine sin, and silence judgment. They say, “God is love,” but they forget that God is also holy and just.
📖 John 3:17-19 (KJV) For God sent not his Son into the world to condemn the world; but that the world through him might be saved. 18 He that believeth on him is not condemned: but he that believeth not is condemned already, because he hath not believed in the name of the only begotten Son of God. 19 And this is the condemnation, that light is come into the world, and men loved darkness rather than light, because their deeds were evil.
Faith Alone of Jesus is the way to escape hell, if you don’t have it there’s not excuses because its free and its a gift only the sin of pride will stop you from believing.
