The Power of Music
✅ Music has power to drive away evil spirits
📖 1 Samuel 16:23 (KJV) And it came to pass, when the evil spirit from God was upon Saul, that David took an harp, and played with his hand: so Saul was refreshed, and was well, and the evil spirit departed from him.
Music has the power to change the atmosphere and in this story, David drives away the evil spirit that was upon Saul, which made Saul calm. Now although this might have been a miracle of such, the fact is that music does influence our mental health.
Music has a powerful influence on the mind and spirit. Calming and structured forms, such as classical or worship music, can ease anxiety, improve focus, and bring peace, especially when they lift the heart toward God. On the other hand, aggressive or chaotic styles often marked by distortion, violent themes, or occult influences can stir anger, depression, and rebellion. Studies even suggest that constant exposure to harsh, dissonant sounds may heighten stress and agitation.
If we think about it in most instance (not all) we became like what we listen too.
I remember I wanted to be cool like the American Black culture because I watched to many movies like “Blood in and Blood out, Boyz n the Hood & Menace II Society” which lead me to listen to gangster hiphop and in turn lead to me hang with gangs (which was never me) but this is the power of music, gangster hiphop shaped cultures, It also spread glamorized images of violence, drugs, misogyny, and gang culture. Some young people copied the “gangster” lifestyle without the context, which influenced crime, rebellion, and disrespect for authority.
✅ Music was created in heaven
📖 Ezekiel 28:13 (KJV) Thou hast been in Eden the garden of God; every precious stone was thy covering, the sardius, topaz, and the diamond, the beryl, the onyx, and the jasper, the sapphire, the emerald, and the carbuncle, and gold: the workmanship of thy tabrets and of thy pipes was prepared in thee in the day that thou wast created.
God created music in heaven, as we see here God created angels that had built in instruments, in this particular story, its speaking of Satan as an worship angel, this shows why music is such an big influence in the ungodly world because Satan was created to play music at a high level, instead Satan used it to glorify himself and was eventually cast out of heaven.
📖 Isaiah 14:12-15 (KJV) How art thou fallen from heaven, O Lucifer, son of the morning! how art thou cut down to the ground, which didst weaken the nations! 13 For thou hast said in thine heart, I will ascend into heaven, I will exalt my throne above the stars of God: I will sit also upon the mount of the congregation, in the sides of the north: 14 I will ascend above the heights of the clouds; I will be like the most High. 15 Yet thou shalt be brought down to hell, to the sides of the pit.
Music is apart of us as we are made in the image of God (Genesis 1:26), and God made music in the beginning of time for his worship.
📖 Psalms 98:5-6 (KJV) Sing unto the LORD with the harp; with the harp, and the voice of a psalm. 6 With trumpets and sound of cornet make a joyful noise before the LORD, the King.
And music will be used in the end of time for his worship.
📖 Revelation 5:9-12 (KJV) And they sung a new song, saying, Thou art worthy to take the book, and to open the seals thereof: for thou wast slain, and hast redeemed us to God by thy blood out of every kindred, and tongue, and people, and nation; 10And hast made us unto our God kings and priests: and we shall reign on the earth. 11 And I beheld, and I heard the voice of many angels round about the throne and the beasts and the elders: and the number of them was ten thousand times ten thousand, and thousands of thousands; 12 Saying with a loud voice, Worthy is the Lamb that was slain to receive power, and riches, and wisdom, and strength, and honour, and glory, and blessing.
This was the purpose for music to worship God but Satan has taken us away from that meaning of music and turn music into self glorification or defilement.
✅ God commands worship
📖 Psalms 150:3-6 (KJV) Praise him with the sound of the trumpet: praise him with the psaltery and harp. 4 Praise him with the timbrel and dance: praise him with stringed instruments and organs. 5 Praise him upon the loud cymbals: praise him upon the high sounding cymbals. 6 Let every thing that hath breath praise the LORD. Praise ye the LORD.
In the Old Testament there was dedicated group of Musicians which was the duty of the Levites.
📖 1 Chronicles 15:16 (KJV) And David spake to the chief of the Levites to appoint their brethren to be the singers with instruments of musick, psalteries and harps and cymbals, sounding, by lifting up the voice with joy.
📖 1 Chronicles 25:6 (KJV) All these were under the hands of their father for song in the house of the LORD, with cymbals, psalteries, and harps, for the service of the house of God, according to the king's order to Asaph, Jeduthun, and Heman.
There are many reasons why God command worship in form of music because it glorifies him, calm soothing music helps the mind to focus on God when worshipping, it prepares our mood and it can teach the law of God.
📖 Colossians 3:16 (KJV) Let the word of Christ dwell in you richly in all wisdom; teaching and admonishing one another in psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, singing with grace in your hearts to the Lord.
Notice the word “teaching” music is a great teaching tool to memorize things, In the Maori culture we used music to pass on history and stories, as we didn’t have paper and pens back in the past, it was all songs.
Even today I have used music to teach me other languages. One thing we need to remember is that music was designed for God!
📖 Ephesians 5:19 (KJV) Speaking to yourselves in psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, singing and making melody in your heart to the Lord;
✅ Music is a spiritual weapon
📖 2 Chronicles 20:21-23 (KJV) And when he had consulted with the people, he appointed singers unto the LORD, and that should praise the beauty of holiness, as they went out before the army, and to say, Praise the LORD; for his mercy endureth for ever. 22 And when they began to sing and to praise, the LORD set ambushments against the children of Ammon, Moab, and mount Seir, which were come against Judah; and they were smitten. 23 For the children of Ammon and Moab stood up against the inhabitants of mount Seir, utterly to slay and destroy them: and when they had made an end of the inhabitants of Seir, every one helped to destroy another.
Music is a way to call Gods help in your life, just like prayer, music is a powerful weapon to call upon God. I remember the story of Paul and Silas when they sang and miracle happened.
📖 Acts 16:25-26 (KJV) And at midnight Paul and Silas prayed, and sang praises unto God: and the prisoners heard them. 26 And suddenly there was a great earthquake, so that the foundations of the prison were shaken: and immediately all the doors were opened, and every one's bands were loosed.
We should never underestimate the power of music, it has a lot of uses and when used correctly it can be powerful in our lives. Amen.
