Criticism of Hyper Grace

hyper-grace doctrine teaches that emphasizes God's grace to such an extent that it often downplays or even dismisses the need for holy living. While it rightly acknowledges that salvation is by grace through faith.

📖 Ephesians 2:8 (KJV) For by grace are ye saved through faith; and that not of yourselves: it is the gift of God:

💭 hyper-grace goes further to suggest that God no longer convicts believers of sin, or that there are no consequences for sin once you’re saved.

📌 That’s where misunderstanding often creeps in especially when we teach doctrines like “once saved, always saved.” Some assume we’re saying, “Live however you want, God doesn’t care.” That’s not what we believe. Yes, salvation is secure. But that doesn’t mean God stops caring about how we live.

📌 God still judges His people not to condemn them to hell, but to discipline, correct, and ultimately reward them. Holy living still matters. Our actions still have consequences both in this life and in eternity which we will discuss.

📋 So let’s be clear:

• Salvation is by grace alone, through faith alone.

• But grace doesn’t erase the call to holiness.

• God saves us freely, but He still holds us accountable as His children.

1️⃣ Spiritual laziness: Introduction

🔷 If people believe their actions have no eternal or earthly consequences, it can lead to careless or sinful living.

Hyper-grace often teaches that since all sins (past, present, and future) are already forgiven, there’s no need to confess or turn from sin. That removes the spiritual discipline and leads to apathy. Yet their verse they quote is Romans 6:14.

📖 Romans 6:14 (KJV) For sin shall not have dominion over you: for ye are not under the law, but under grace.

  • Yes, we’re not under the law as a system of salvation — but Paul immediately says that doesn't mean we can live in sin

📖 Romans 6:15 (KJV) What then? shall we sin, because we are not under the law, but under grace? God forbid.

  • Grace empowers us to live free from sin, not indulge in it.

📖 Titus 2:11-12 (KJV) For the grace of God that bringeth salvation hath appeared to all men, 12 Teaching us that, denying ungodliness and worldly lusts, we should live soberly, righteously, and godly, in this present world;

📌 the Bible is very clear that we are held accountable for what we do after salvation and that we do not have a free license to sin.

🔎 They say “The law was nailed to the cross”

📖 Colossians 2:13-14 (KJV) And you, being dead in your sins and the uncircumcision of your flesh, hath he quickened together with him, having forgiven you all trespasses; 14Blotting out the handwriting of ordinances that was against us, which was contrary to us, and took it out of the way, nailing it to his cross;

  • The record of debt against us (our guilt under the law) was nailed to the cross not God’s moral standards.

‼️ Jesus said.

📖 John 14:15 (KJV) If ye love me, keep my commandments.

🔎 They say “The Old Testament law doesn’t apply to Christians at all”

We don't obey the ceremonial and civil laws given to Israel (like food laws, temple rituals).

But the moral law don't murder, don't lie, don't commit adultery still reflects God’s holy character, and it’s repeated in the New Testament. 1 Peter 1:16 quotes Leviticus:

📖 1 Peter 1:16 (KJV) Because it is written, Be ye holy; for I am holy.

  • God’s moral nature doesn't change.

🔎 They Say “We're already perfect in Christ, so it doesn’t matter how we live”

  • Our position in Christ is perfect (justified), but our daily life (sanctification) is a process of becoming more like Him. Paul said…

📖 Philippians 2:12-15 (KJV) Wherefore, my beloved, as ye have always obeyed, not as in my presence only, but now much more in my absence, work out your own salvation with fear and trembling. 13 For it is God which worketh in you both to will and to do of his good pleasure. 14 Do all things without murmurings and disputings: 15 That ye may be blameless and harmless, the sons of God, without rebuke, in the midst of a crooked and perverse nation, among whom ye shine as lights in the world;

📌 It doesn’t seem like we can do whatever we want without consequences.

2️⃣ Earthly Consequences

🔷 Hyper-grace often teaches that since all sins (past, present, and future) are already forgiven, there’s no need to confess or turn from sin. That will only create spiritual laziness and weak running christians that won’t do nothing for God, but the Apostle Paul makes it very clear that we are in a race to win.

📖 Hebrews 12:1 (KJV) Wherefore seeing we also are compassed about with so great a cloud of witnesses, let us lay aside every weight, and the sin which doth so easily beset us, and let us run with patience the race that is set before us,

📖 1 Corinthians 9:24 (KJV) Know ye not that they which run in a race run all, but one receiveth the prize? So run, that ye may obtain.

📌 It is a dangerous mindset to have to think that everything is all good and there wont be any accountability, but God is clear that their is earthly consequences and eternal consequences.

📖 Revelation 3:19 (KJV) As many as I love, I rebuke and chasten: be zealous therefore, and repent.

📌 Now repentance for salvation is different from repentance for the believer, once your saved God commands us to repent of our wrong doing, that we might be examples of light for people to get saved. Now if we continue to sin and be bad examples of the light, God punishes us with allowing sin to catch up to us and all the bad that happens in life to happen to us, not only that but God will punish us like a father to his children.

📖 Hebrews 12:6, 11 (KJV) For whom the Lord loveth he chasteneth, and scourgeth every son whom he receiveth. 11 Now no chastening for the present seemeth to be joyous, but grievous: nevertheless afterward it yieldeth the peaceable fruit of righteousness unto them which are exercised thereby.

📌 As a believer you are born again into the family of God and he being a good father will chastise us when we do wrong to correct us so we don’t grow up to be rat bags or disobedient, its like a deterrent to help us do right.

Jeremiah 10:24 (KJV) O LORD, correct me, but with judgment; not in thine anger, lest thou bring me to nothing.

💭 Even the prophet knew God will correct saved christians that sin.

📖 Hebrews 10:26-31 (KJV) For if we sin wilfully after that we have received the knowledge of the truth, there remaineth no more sacrifice for sins, 27 But a certain fearful looking for of judgment and fiery indignation, which shall devour the adversaries. 28 He that despised Moses' law died without mercy under two or three witnesses: 29 Of how much sorer punishment, suppose ye, shall he be thought worthy, who hath trodden under foot the Son of God, and hath counted the blood of the covenant, wherewith he was sanctified, an unholy thing, and hath done despite unto the Spirit of grace? 30 For we know him that hath said, Vengeance belongeth unto me, I will recompense, saith the Lord. And again, The Lord shall judge his people. 31 It is a fearful thing to fall into the hands of the living God.

🔥 There are stories in the Bible where saved christians were cut short for their disobedience.

🔥 1. Ananias and Sapphira

(Acts 5:1–11)

  • They were part of the early church — saved believers.

  • Lied to the Holy Spirit about their giving.

  • God struck them dead instantly inside the church!

  • Proof: God deals seriously with sin even among believers.

🔥 2. Moses

(Numbers 20:7–12)

  • Moses was definitely saved — he appears later with Jesus in glory (Matthew 17:3, the Transfiguration).

  • But because he disobeyed God (striking the rock instead of speaking to it), he was forbidden from entering the Promised Land.

  • Proof: Even great spiritual leaders face earthly consequences.

🔥 3. King David

(2 Samuel 11–12)

  • David was a man after God's own heart — a true believer.

  • Yet when he committed adultery and murder, God judged him:

    • His infant son died (2 Samuel 12:14–18).

    • His household was cursed with violence and rebellion.

  • Proof: Forgiveness does not cancel out earthly consequences.

🔥 4. Corinthian Christians

(1 Corinthians 11:27–32)

  • Paul said some believers in Corinth were sick and had died because they took the Lord’s Supper unworthily.

  • Proof: God judges His church even now to keep it pure.

🔥 5. Lot’s wife

(Genesis 19:15–26; Luke 17:32)

  • Lot was called “righteous” (2 Peter 2:7), meaning his family knew God.

  • But Lot’s wife disobeyed God’s command by looking back at Sodom — and was judged immediately (turned into a pillar of salt).

  • Proof: Salvation of a family doesn’t exempt individuals from personal responsibility.

📌 So accountability and consequences are in full affect once we are born again, we are born into the family of God and he like a good father with chastise us and correct us when we sin and do wrong because he loves us, we too discipline our children to show them right from wrong that they might do well in life because we care for them.

3️⃣ Eternal Consequences

🔷 We have eternal consequences too, this is not referring to salvation but rather positions and rewards in heaven.

📖 2 Corinthians 5:8-11 (KJV) We are confident, I say, and willing rather to be absent from the body, and to be present with the Lord. 9 Wherefore we labour, that, whether present or absent, we may be accepted of him. 10 For we must all appear before the judgment seat of Christ; that every one may receive the things done in his body, according to that he hath done, whether it be good or bad. 11 Knowing therefore the terror of the Lord, we persuade men; but we are made manifest unto God; and I trust also are made manifest in your consciences.

📌 We will be judge for what we did, and God will reward every Christian eternally according to what we do. Sounds like we need to start running the race!

📖 Revelation 22:12 (KJV) And, behold, I come quickly; and my reward is with me, to give every man according as his work shall be.

💭 We don’t want to be that person that has no rewards in heaven, we don’t even want to fathom what that would be like?

📖 1 Corinthians 3:13-18 (KJV) Every man's work shall be made manifest: for the day shall declare it, because it shall be revealed by fire; and the fire shall try every man's work of what sort it is. 14 If any man's work abide which he hath built thereupon, he shall receive areward. 15 If any man's work shall be burned, he shall suffer loss: but he himself shall be saved; yet so as by fire. 16 Know ye not that ye are the temple of God, and that the Spirit of God dwelleth in you? 17 If any man defile the temple of God, him shall God destroy; for the temple of God is holy, which temple ye are. 18 Let no man deceive himself. If any man among you seemeth to be wise in this world, let him become a fool, that he may be wise.

🔥 We want God to call us faithful servant when he receives us in heaven and gives us our portion of rewards,

Matthew 25:21 (KJV) His lord said unto him, Well done, thou good and faithful servant: thou hast been faithful over a few things, I will make thee ruler over many things: enter thou into the joy of thy lord.

  • We don’t want to be like the hyper grace crowd where they hide the talent and God calls them unprofitable servants?

📌 The danger of Hyper Grace is that it creates lukewarm believers people who think spiritual growth, repentance, or obedience are optional. Jesus said in Revelation 3:16 that He will “spit out” the lukewarm. That doesn’t sound like grace without responsibility.

💭 Grace is powerful, but it's meant to transform us, not excuse sin. Like Paul said in Romans 6:1–2:
"Shall we continue in sin, that grace may abound? God forbid."

📌 if this doctrine keeps spreading, it’ll weaken the Church, water down the gospel, and leave people unprepared to face judgment. The fear of the Lord is the beginning of wisdom, and hyper-grace erases that fear. Amen.
