Building on the Wrong Foundation

📖 Matthew 7:24-27 (KJV) Therefore whosoever heareth these sayings of mine, and doeth them, I will liken him unto a wise man, which built his house upon a rock: 25 And the rain descended, and the floods came, and the winds blew, and beat upon that house; and it fell not: for it was founded upon a rock. 26 And every one that heareth these sayings of mine, and doeth them not, shall be likened unto a foolish man, which built his house upon the sand: 27 And the rain descended, and the floods came, and the winds blew, and beat upon that house; and it fell: and great was the fall of it.

  • A good-looking Christian life will still collapse if it is not built on the Word of God.

1️⃣ Opening Truth: The Foundation Must Be the Bible

  • Jesus said the wise man is not just the one who hears His words but the one who does them, what is the word that Jesus is referring to? It’s the Bible, Jesus is that word.

📖 John 1:1-2 (KJV) In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. 2 The same was in the beginning with God.

📖 John 1:14 (KJV) And the Word was made flesh, and dwelt among us, (and we beheld his glory, the glory as of the only begotten of the Father,) full of grace and truth.

  • Why it’s important to know because people will make up all sorts of beliefs but God is not the God of confusion.

📖 1 Corinthians 14:33 (KJV) For God is not the author of confusion, but of peace, as in all churches of the saints.

  • It can get confusing if there are still prophets that prophesying their own words, so what God did was sent his Son to finalize his word.

📖 Hebrews 1:1-2 (KJV) God, who at sundry times and in divers manners spake in time past unto the fathers by the prophets, 2 Hath in these last days spoken unto us by his Son, whom he hath appointed heir of all things, by whom also he made the worlds;

  • God don’t speak by prophets for new revelations, God sent his Son to tell us the rest of the plan and finalize his word, we don’t need extra revelations.

📖 2 Peter 1:19-21 (KJV) We have also a more sure word of prophecy; whereunto ye do well that ye take heed, as unto a light that shineth in a dark place, until the day dawn, and the day star arise in your hearts: 20 Knowing this first, that no prophecy of the scripture is of any private interpretation. 21 For the prophecy came not in old time by the will of man: but holy men of God spake as they were moved by the Holy Ghost.

  • When people say they have a new word that only they know, its not of God, when I preach I preach only whats in the Bible, because its more then enough study for us and has all the essentials to live a good and peaceful life, and we don’t need extra prophecies.

  • The most important thing for us is to understand that the Bible is the complete word of God and its our foundation to life. If the foundation isn't finished with Jesus and his disciples (thats including Paul too) then the foundation isn't complete and hereby isn't solid because we are still making the foundation? But Paul said the foundations are complete and we are building upon the foundation.

📖 1 Corinthians 3:11-13 (KJV) For other foundation can no man lay than that is laid, which is Jesus Christ. 12 Now if any man build upon this foundation gold, silver, precious stones, wood, hay, stubble; 13 Every man's work shall be made manifest: for the day shall declare it, because it shall be revealed by fire; and the fire shall try every man's work of what sort it is.

  • What we see is that the foundation is laid already which is Jesus Christ, but if there is more revelations and prophecies then the foundations aren't finished and it's not solid or fit to be called a foundation!

2️⃣ Hearing vs Obeying

📖 Matthew 7:24 (KJV) Therefore whosoever heareth these sayings of mine, and doeth them, I will liken him unto a wise man, which built his house upon a rock:

  • You cannot obey what you do not know and you cannot know God’s will if you are not in God’s Word.

Many people build their Christian life on:

  • Church attendance, Emotions, Music, A preacher, A denomination, But not on the Bible.

  • When trials hit, sickness comes, money dries up, relationships break, or prayers seem unanswered people quit church and quit God but its not Gods fault its our own fault for not having the right foundations in place, the word of God.

  • Jesus says both builders heard the Word but only one obeyed.

📖 James 1:22 (KJV) But be ye doers of the word, and not hearers only, deceiving your own selves.

Saul an example

  • Saul heard the words, and God was about to bless him as king.

📖 1 Samuel 15:1-3 (KJV) Samuel also said unto Saul, The LORD sent me to anoint thee to be king over his people, over Israel: now therefore hearken thou unto the voice of the words of the LORD. 2 Thus saith the LORD of hosts, I remember that which Amalek did to Israel, how he laid wait for him in the way, when he came up from Egypt. 3 Now go and smite Amalek, and utterly destroy all that they have, and spare them not; but slay both man and woman, infant and suckling, ox and sheep, camel and ass.

  • Did Saul obey?

📖 1 Samuel 15:14-15 (KJV) And Samuel said, What meaneth then this bleating of the sheep in mine ears, and the lowing of the oxen which I hear? 15 And Saul said, They have brought them from the Amalekites: for the people spared the best of the sheep and of the oxen, to sacrifice unto the LORD thy God; and the rest we have utterly destroyed.

  • Nope he got it wrong he kept the spoil instead of destroying it.

📖 1 Samuel 15:22-23 (KJV) And Samuel said, Hath the LORD as great delight in burnt offerings and sacrifices, as in obeying the voice of the LORD? Behold, to obey is better than sacrifice, and to hearken than the fat of rams. 23 For rebellion is as the sin of witchcraft, and stubbornness is as iniquity and idolatry. Because thou hast rejected the word of the LORD, he hath also rejected thee from being king.

  • We see that Saul lost his blessings and he spiraled out of control and ended up dead!

You can:

• Sit in church for years

• Know Christian language

• Post Bible verses online

And still not be grounded.

A Bible on the shelf builds nothing.

A Bible in the heart builds everything.

3️⃣ Storms Reveal Foundations

  • Storms don’t create weakness they reveal it.

📖 Matthew 7:25-27 (KJV) And the rain descended, and the floods came, and the winds blew, and beat upon that house; and it fell not: for it was founded upon a rock. 26 And every one that heareth these sayings of mine, and doeth them not, shall be likened unto a foolish man, which built his house upon the sand: 27 And the rain descended, and the floods came, and the winds blew, and beat upon that house; and it fell: and great was the fall of it.

Storms come to everyone:

• Saved and lost

• Faithful and unfaithful

• Wise and foolish

The difference is not the storm.

The difference is the foundation.

When the storm hits:

• The Word-grounded believer leans on Scripture

• The emotion-grounded believer walks away

📖 Matthew 8:23-27 (KJV) And when he was entered into a ship, his disciples followed him. 24 And, behold, there arose a great tempest in the sea, insomuch that the ship was covered with the waves: but he was asleep. 25 And his disciples came to him, and awoke him, saying, Lord, save us: we perish. 26 And he saith unto them, Why are ye fearful, O ye of little faith? Then he arose, and rebuked the winds and the sea; and there was a great calm. 27 But the men marvelled, saying, What manner of man is this, that even the winds and the sea obey him!

  • We know that storms comes to anyone, even the best of us, so the best way to live in life is to have the best life jacket called Jesus Christ, the best foundation called the words of Christ, only then we can handle all storms of life.

Horatio Spafford was a successful Christian lawyer in the 1800s.

In a short span of time:

  • His business burned down in the Great Chicago Fire

  • His only son died

  • He sent his wife and four daughters ahead to England by ship

🚢 The ship collided with another vessel and sank.
All four daughters drowned.

His wife survived and sent a telegram with two words:

“Saved alone.”

As Spafford sailed to meet her, the captain told him when they were passing the place where his daughters died.

It was there in the middle of the storm of his life that Spafford wrote the words:

“When peace like a river attendeth my way,
When sorrows like sea billows roll…
It is well, it is well with my soul.”

  • We cannot handle the storms of life alone.

4️⃣ Christ Is the Only Sure Ground

📖 1 Corinthians 3:11 (KJV) For other foundation can no man lay than that is laid, which is Jesus Christ.

  • For real growth and spiritual development it's done through the word of God, not through emotions or or church rituals.

📖 1 Peter 2:2-3 (KJV) As newborn babes, desire the sincere milk of the word, that ye may grow thereby: 3 If so be ye have tasted that the Lord is gracious.

  • Notice to grow in God its by his word alone, the words of Christ the finished foundation called the Bible. It’s not by the words of a new prophet that has extra teachings outside the Bible, Paul said we build on the finished foundations of Christ, the Words that are already there are churches made.

📖 John 17:17 (KJV) Sanctify them through thy truth: thy word is truth.

  • We are sanctified through the words of God, if you want to get right and clean its through his word, we underestimate the power of his words because we look at it as a book? But in it are the teachings of life, living a wholesome life of blessings.

Conclusion

📖 Luke 6:46-49 (KJV) And why call ye me, Lord, Lord, and do not the things which I say? 47 Whosoever cometh to me, and heareth my sayings, and doeth them, I will shew you to whom he is like: 48 He is like a man which built an house, and digged deep, and laid the foundation on a rock: and when the flood arose, the stream beat vehemently upon that house, and could not shake it: for it was founded upon a rock. 49 But he that heareth, and doeth not, is like a man that without a foundation built an house upon the earth; against which the stream did beat vehemently, and immediately it fell; and the ruin of that house was great.

If your Christian life is built on:

• Feelings → you will quit when you feel dry

• People → you will quit when they fail

• Church programs → you will quit when things change

But if your life is built on Scripture, you will stand when everything else shakes.

A church quitter is usually a Bible neglecter.

A weak faith is usually a weak Word life.

A falling house is always a faulty foundation.

🔨 Final Challenge

Are you building with:

• Daily Bible reading

• Obedient living

• A hunger for truth

Or are you building with:

• Sunday-only Christianity

• Emotional faith

• Religious routine

Because when the storm comes and it will only one house will still be standing.
